Main features
IMO Certified Ruggedness
The icom ic GM1600 has passed all the rigorous tests stipulated in IMO resolutions A.694(17) and MSC.149(77): a one-meter drop, thermal shock, vibration, and one-meter immersion in water. Even after such stringent testing, it remains effectively waterproof and salt spray resistant, maintaining its one-meter waterproof depth.
Polar Battery Life
The optional BP-234 lithium battery pack provides over eight hours of talk time for the icom ic GM1600, even in temperatures as low as -20°C, and has a five-year warranty.

Glove-Friendly Large Control Buttons
Even with warm gloves, the oversized, printed buttons on the back provide clear tactile feedback. The high-brightness LCD screen offers a wide viewing angle, clearly displaying channels, battery status, and transmission status; the top indicator lights are also clearly visible when the radio is clipped to the chest.
One-Button Distress Call
A protected red button instantly selects channel 16 and sends a 1-watt distress signal. Simple illustrative instructions are riveted to the aft hull, making it easy for even untrained passengers to call for help.
Compact and Lightweight with Excellent Buoyancy
Weighing only 385 grams with the BP-234, this radio easily fits into a life jacket pocket and floats on the water even if it falls in. The short antenna and rounded edges reduce the risk of snagging when climbing into a life raft, while its RF performance meets the 0.2 µV sensitivity requirement for receiving weak signals in open water.
Supports Digital Selective Calling (DSC)
The icom ic GM1600 is primarily a voice device, but it can be integrated with the ship’s DSC controller as a portable extension of the icom AIS radio network. Received DSC alarms can be voice-forwarded, ensuring that crew members on the life raft are aware of nearby AIS-equipped vessels even when their own beacons are out of range.
